Girls Boys Scouts Earn High Award of Triple Crown

By Y Sigala

Girls that are Boys Scouts is a fairly new phenomena.  The Boy Scouts of America opened a Venturing Chapter in February 1998 for older teenagers, young women and men (ages 14 to 21), that offers high adventure challenges.  Northern Virginia has an all female troop, Venture Crew 574, that is one third Jewish.  VC 574 is a High Adventure troop that trains year round for intense adventures and participates in various community services.

This last Fall, four Venture Crew girls of 574 earned the Triple Crown Award for successfully completing three of the toughest High Adventure Boys Scouts Camps, and three of the four are Northern Virginia Jewish young women.  The first challenge was the Sea Base Camp in Florida, where they canoed 5 miles to and from an island in open seas where they lived off the land for a week.  The second challenge was the Philmont Camp in New Mexico where they hiked over 80 miles and reached the summit of Mt Baldy (7,464 ft).  The final challenge was a week long canoeing and portaging adventure in the Northern Boundary Waters at the Northern Tier Camp Minnesota.

These Jewish young women are amazing!  They not only can hike 15 miles with a full 50 lbs pack in a day, they also support our Jewish Communities through different programs, and they support Northern Virginia Communities.  As Venture Scouts, they also help protect our environment through participation in conservation programs ranging from the Arlington Costal Cleanup to The Shenandoah Park Conservation Days.  The three Triple Crown Award awardees this Fall were Leah Davis, Senior at Washington-Lee High School, Arlington, Sarah Ritter, Senior at J.E.B. Stuart High School, Falls Church and Bradlie Martz-Sigala, Junior at Lake Braddock Secondary School, Burke.
